The Purple Fernleaf Acacia gets its common name from its blue-gray, frond-like foliage that starts off as purple. These vibrant leaves create a stunning sight on the weeping branches of this small evergreen canopy, which typically measures 20-30 feet in both height and width. The foliage stands out against the tree's neutral gray bark and brown seed pods, providing a beautiful contrast to the fuzzy, yellow, lightly-fragranced flowers that bloom from winter through spring. Although the Purple Fernleaf Acacia is not native to Southern California, like other members of its genus, it attracts native wildlife. This fast-growing tree can also play a beneficial role in the Southern California landscape by helping to stabilize slopes. Once established, the Acacia exhibits relatively good tolerance to frost, salt spray, and drought.
