Commonly known as Artichoke Agave, Agave parryi var. truncata is a compact Agave with short, stout foliage ending in a sharp point, reminiscent of artichoke leaves. A low maintenance and highly drought tolerant Agave that’s perfect for xeric gardens, desert gardens, and containers. Shield-shaped leaves are a powderdy blue-gray and have sharp, reddish brown marginal teeth and terminal spines. As such, it should be planted where it will be out of reach of people and pets. Once it reaches maturity, it will bloom with a 10 to 20 foot tall stalk of yellow-orange flowers. After flowering, the primary rosette will die, leaving behind a colony of smaller offsets. Sometimes confused with the species (Agave parryi), its leaves are shorter and broader and its individual rosettes are larger, reaching 3 to 4 feet wide. Prefers full sun to light shade inland. Plant in sharply draining soil and water infrequently to not at all once established.
