Big Red is a rhizomatous perennial cultivated variety of Kangaroo Paw. It is named after its comparably large, fuzzy blooms. The claw-looking flowers of Big Red take form and fan open in late winter to early spring. They also periodically bloom throughout the year, especially if dead flowers are removed. The green, lance-shaped foliage creates a beautiful contrast with the plant's floral parts. This evergreen cultivar doesn't occupy much space in the landscape, reaching a height of only three to five feet and a width of two to four feet. For optimal results, it is recommended to plant Tall Red in well-drained soil with full sun to light shade exposure. Irrigation should be moderate, and the fertilizer used should have low phosphorus content, as the perennial may be sensitive to this element. Ongoing care for the plant involves annually removing dead flowers and leaves. Apart from that, it requires minimal maintenance.
