A staple of the California coastal sage scrub and chaparral communities, Artemisia californica will grow in the hottest, driest conditions, in very lean soil with infrequent to no water once established. An evergreen shrub that’s variable in size and shape, it can be cut back to maintain a somewhat smaller, more compact stature but has a naturally sprawling, open form. During the cooler winter and early spring months, the plant is covered in feathery silver foliage that gives the plant a soft texture. In summer, this foliage is replaced by smaller leaves that reveal the plant’s branching structure. Goes fully dormant during the hot summer months, during which time it should be given infrequent to no water. Provides food and habitat for a wide variety of native birds, butterflies, moths, and small mammals. Should be grown in full sun in very well-draining soil. Perfect for dry slopes and for use in erosion control and habitat restoration. Foliage is fragrant and deer resistant. We also grow two low growing groundcover selections: ‘Canyon Grey’ and ‘Montara
