Big Basin Sagebrush is a shrub that grows throughout large ranges of the Western United States, including the California Floristic Province and the Great Basin. Indigenous people throughout the country use this plant medicinally and as a food source. Underutilizinsed in the landscape setting, this plant is particularly resilient in dry areas. While the plant may not be as easy to establish and grow in Los Angeles County and the surrounding areas, it is still a relatively tough plant. This specific Sagebrush is known for its extreme drought tolerance, low-maintenance, aroma, silver-like foliage, and wildlife value. Growing between four to eight feet tall (after many years) by three to four feet wide, the evergreen shrub tends to keep its leaves throughout the year. Big Basin Sagebrush is woody and multi-branched. It is notably slow growing after initial bursts when it is young and can take many years to grow to a mature size. Minute flowers appear in clusters in late summer through early fall.. Under the right conditions, the long-lived species can live up to a century. Big Basin Sagebrush prefers full sun, well-drained soil, and drier climates. The shape and form of the plant can be improved by pruning.
