Native to the California coastline from San Francisco to Baja, Atriplex leucophylla forms a sprawling (occasionally mounding) ground cover on beach dunes and in sandy soils. Grey-green foliage forms rosette-like clusters along the branches. Blooms from spring into fall but flowers are small and often hidden by the foliage. Variable in size, it stays quite low but may mound up to 1 foot high and can spread anywhere from 1 to 6 feet. Useful for coastal restoration as it prefers seaside conditions. May not survive inland as it is frost tender. Requires sharp drainage and only occasional water. Important food source for native birds.
