An herbaceous perennial Baccharis native to California coastal salt and freshwater marshes and inland streams. Spreads quickly via rhizomes to form colonies of 3 to 6-foot-tall stalks covered in lance-shaped green foliage. Blooms in summer and fall with clusters of white pom pom flowers that are an important nectar source for native insects and butterflies. Grows in poorly-draining, wet soil and tolerates seasonal flooding. A good native to use for soil stabilization and conditioning in degraded areas. Plant in full sun to part shade in consistently moist to wet soil. Winter dormant and drought stress deciduous. Typically used in restoration projects rather than residential or commercial landscapes but is a good addition to wildlife gardens.
