A flowering groundcover native to the California coastline that grows in dunes and sandy soils. Its prostrate stems form a spreading mat of silvery green foliage. Blooms in spring with bright yellow flowers that age to orange/red. Native to Coastal Strand plant communities, it is tolerant of high wind, salt spray, and saline soils. Needs sharply-draining, low-nutrient soil. Useful in coastal habitat restoration. Prefers coastal conditions but may be grown inland in partial sun and well-draining (preferably sandy) soil. Typically short-lived in areas outside coastal conditions.
