A hybrid introduced by the Saratoga Horticultural Foundation, ‘Julia Phelps’ is one of the most striking Ceanothus when in bloom. It forms a large, densely-branched evergreen shrub that can be used as an informal hedge or screen or shaped into a small tree. In spring, it’s covered in rosy purple buds that open to clusters of deep indigo blue flowers. Foliage is small, glossy, and deeply-textured. Plant in full sun to part shade inland. Sensitive to summer water, it should be watered infrequently to not at all once established. Best planted in the fall/winter. Needs sharply-draining soil. A good source of nectar, seeds, and habitat for native wildlife.
