A large flowering evergreen shrub known for its distinctive blooms as well as its tolerance of tough growing conditions. Easily withstands poor soil, high heat, high wind, and even salt spray. In spring, it’s covered in rose-colored buds that open to large, pure white flowers that have a crimson spot at the base of each petal. Crinkled, lanceolate foliage is glossy dark green on top and light grey-green on the bottom, contrasting nicely with its reddish stems. Very fragrant due to its high resin content. Reaches 3 to 5 feet tall and wide. Perfect for dry slopes or banks, Mediterranean gardens, urban plantings, or used as a decorative hedge or screen. Plant in full sun to light shade inland. Not particular about soil type as long as it is sharply-draining. Water infrequently to not at all once established. Flower petals create a fair amount of litter once they drop, so it’s best planted in an area where this will not cause a problem for people or other plants. Deer resistant.
