Clivia is a South African woodland native that can easily be grown as either a houseplant or in a shady garden. Its strappy, glossy green foliage slowly grows into a clump about two feet tall and wide. It blooms in spring with large heads of trumpet-shaped orange flowers with yellow throats, followed by large red berries. Plant in part shade to full shade inland in fertile but well-draining soil. Needs only occasional watering once well established. Grows and blooms best when its roots are confined or cramped.
