A grass-like perennial that grows in large clumps of strappy white and green variegated foliage. Tiny violet-colored flowers float about the foliage in mid spring followed by dark blue berries. Will spread quite a bit in cool, regularly-watered areas with nutrient-rich soil but also useful in dry shade where it won’t spread as much. Prefers full sun on the coast but needs part to full shade inland. Looks best when dead and damaged foliage is removed once a year. Should be cut back and divided every three or four years. Can be susceptible to rust on the leaves that leads to an unsightly appearance.
