Found all along the Southern California coast from San Luis Obispo into Baja, Coast Sunflower is a native evergreen shrub that blooms profusely with golden yellow flowers, first in spring and again in late fall when temperatures begin to cool. May go dormant in hot inland climates without regular irrigation. Can be dead-headed throughout the season for an extended bloom time or seed heads can be left as a food source for birds. Cut back hard once a year if a more compact form is desired. Fast growing but short-lived and may need to be re-planted every few years. Great for use on slopes and for erosion control. We also grow a selection called ‘El Dorado’ that features larger, deep gold flowers and starts blooming earlier in the season.
