California or common buckwheat is an apt name for this plant as it likely the buckwheat that most people are familiar with living in Southern California. Important in beekeeping / honey production. Also and important plant for butterflies and birds. Large variation occurs within this species as it has a wide ranging distribution from coastal to inland plant communities. The straight species is most commonly used restoration and revegetation projects. There are a number of selections that are well suited for commercial and residential applications. Typically carefree once established. If used ornamentally, keep the plant refreshed with an annual pruning to spur new growth in the spring. Creamy to white flowers have a slight tinge of pink and like many Eriogonum turn to rust during the summer and fall.
