Pencil Cactus naturally grows as a large tree, but in garden settings it’s commonly pruned back and kept as a mid-sized or large shrub. Lacking foliage and flowers, its bare branches make for an interesting sculptural form in the garden. It will turn a deeper green the more shade it gets and will take on orange and pink tones in full sun. We also grow a variety called ‘Sticks on Fire’ that features brighter orange and red tones than the species. Best planted away from high-traffic areas as easily-broken stems produce poisonous sap.
