A variety of Red Fescue that was selected from Point Molate in California that grows in low mounds of soft, flowing, blue-green foliage that spread horizontally by rhizomes, 1 to 2 feet wide. In spring, it blooms with 2 to 3 foot tall spikes of airy, light green flowers tinged with purple. Evergreen foliage does not need to be cut back although it can be sheared short after flowering or even mowed. It can tend to flop and lay on top of itself if it is not maintained in some manner. Perfect for use in meadow gardens or planted en masse as a lawn alternative. Plant in partial or light shade inland as it needs some protection from hot afternoon and evening sun. More drought tolerant than other Red Fescues but looks best with regular to occasional water. Festuca Molate is a cool season grass.
