A hybrid of F. californicum and F. mexicanum introduced by the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, Fremontodendron ‘San Gabriel’ is a very large, showy shrub that grows up to 18 feet tall and 12 feet wide. In spring, its long arching branches are covered in orange buds that open to 3 to 4 inch wide golden yellow flowers. Can be trained into an espalier or screen. Plant in full sun in fast-draining soil. Should be given no summer water once established.Is typically included in the challenging category as it can be difficult to establish. Best if planted in fall/winter. Stellate hairs on leaves/stems can be irritating to some.
