Hybrids of our California native coastal Iris that are bred for their vivid flower color and striking patterning. They are available in a wide variety of colors and are often multi-toned and variable in their petal shapes and formations. Flowers bloom in early spring just above strappy evergreen foliage. With flowers, they grow just 12 to 18 inches tall and spread 2 to 3 feet wide. Have one bloom period per year. Clumps can be dug up and divided in early winter. Known to be fussier than bearded and other iris that thrive in our area, they should be planted in sharply-draining, preferably acidic soil and part shade to part sun inland. Water regularly to infrequently inland depending on sun exposure. Great for meadow and woodland gardens and planted under oaks. These randomized hybrids differ in their vigor tremendously. Many have problems over-summering, particularly in inland conditions, regardless of exposure. Some of the named hybrids have better performance records, specifically Canyon Snow that is more tolerant of garden conditions.
