Juncus effusus is found throughout California in many different types of wet areas including streams, ponds, marshes, and ditches. It grows in clumps of slender, upright foliage up to 2 to 4 feet high and 2 to 3 feet wide. In wet areas, it will spread continuously and aggressively via rhizomes. Blooms in summer with sprays of light green flowers that age to brown. May self-sow. It’s most often used in wetland restoration for soil retention along banks and drainage ditches. Good for use in water gardens as it prefers to be grown in or adjacent to standing water. Will adapt to average garden soil as long as it is kept consistently moist. Plant in full to part sun.
