Thought to be a hybrid of L. camara and L. montevidensis, ‘New Gold’ is a semi-evergreen Lantana that can be used as a ground cover or low mounding shrub. Deeply textured green leaves are covered in clusters of petite, bright yellow-gold flowers starting in spring and reblooming into the fall. Plant on hillsides, in bare spots that need to be filled quickly, and spilling over walls or out of containers. More compact than Lantana montevidensis, this variety will only grow about 2 feet tall and 2 to 4 feet wide. Flowers best in full sun but can take partial shade. Will grow in most soil types but needs regular to occasional water. Popular in public plantings due to its tolerance of reflected heat, air pollution, poor soil, and resistance to deer and rabbit predation. If used as a groundcover, cut back every year or two to prevent crowding and build up of foliage detritus. This variety is sterile and will not produce berries. Exceptionally easy to grow and maintain. Attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Reduces in cold temperatures in the winter. The level of dormancy is highly dependent on regional low temperatures.
