A compact, long-flowering shrubby perennial with glossy, dark green foliage and lightly-ruffled flowers that come in a variety of bright colors. A Mimulus aurantiacus cultivar, the Mimulus ‘Jelly Bean’ (™) series was bred to be more floriferous and have a tighter growth habit and cleaner foliage than its parent species. Flowers spring to early summer and then sporadically throughout the year. Flowers on 'Jelly Bean Lemon’ are a bright lemon yellow. Prefers well-draining soil. Grow in cool sun to part shade in hot inland climates. Summer water in inland areas should be avoided / minimized. The plant should be allowed to follow its natural cycle which includes a semi-dormant to dormant period in the summer. A common mistake that gardeners make with this plant and other dry Mimulus/Diplacus is the application of extra water when the plants enter this dormancy period in summer, thinking the plant is showing signs of water stress. The opposite is the case and the addition of the extra water will usually kill the plant.
We grow the following ‘Jelly Bean’ series varieties: Red, Orange, Gold, Lemon, Terracotta, Dark Pink, Purple Pink, and Fiesta Marigold (red lined with orange).
