Pink Muhly Grass is a warm season perennial grass with a showy flower display that makes it stunning in mass plantings or used as a soft seasonal accent in the garden. Blooms in late summer and fall with large, airy panicles of tiny flowers, creating a pink cloud that floats a foot above its foliage. Grows as a dense, 2 to 3 foot tall and wide clump of arching dark green foliage. As a warm season grass, it grows vigorously during the warmer months and shuts down during the winter, during which time all or some of its foliage will brown depending on regional microclimates. Can be cut back in late winter (not hedged) or early spring for a flush of new growth or raked to remove dead foliage. Low maintenance and tolerant of drought and poor soil, it is a good candidate for commercial plantings. Tolerates a wide range of soil types as long as they are well-draining. Looks best with occasional water once established and tolerates regular water as well as humid conditions. Prefers full sun to part shade inland. We grow two cultivars of Muhlenbergia capillaris: ‘White Cloud’ which has a slightly narrower form and white flowers, and ‘Regal Mist’ (registered trademark) which has an even showier, more vibrant pink flower display. M capillaris is now often seed grown in the industry and has a wide range of flower colors from nearly cream to the intense pink that most associated with this species. If you would want the more intense coloration, choose one of the named cultivars.
