This west coast native is an evergreen shrub that should be planted in full sun along the coastline or partial sun in the inland environments. Well-drained media is required. The shiny leaves are quite resistant to wind and also give off a pleasant fragrance. The plant is suitable as a large hedge or screen. Inconspicuous, yellow flowers give way to brownish-purple berries that are attractive to wildlife. Because this plant transfers resources (e.g., nitrogen, water, and other nutrients) to nearby plants, it is a great addition to some Southern California gardens. The planting/establishment period for this plant in inland settings is particularly important - fall to winter planting is best.
