A fast-growing Salvia guaranitica hybrid, ‘Amistad’ blooms late spring into fall with tall spikes of large, deep purple flowers on near-black bracts. Flowers are a magnet for hummingbirds and butterflies. Can grow 4 to 5 feet tall within a year although it looks best and stays bushier if pruned mid season and again in late fall or early spring. Plant in full sun along the coast and light shade inland where it appreciates some protection from hot afternoon sun. Prefers fast-draining soil and regular to moderate water. May shed foliage during winter in frost-prone areas.
