A hybrid of Salvia leucophylla and Salvia clevelandii, ‘Whirly Blue’ is a large, shrub-forming Salvia that grows quickly up to 4 to 6 tall and wide. Its small and deeply textured grey-green foliage is highly fragrant. In spring and fall it blooms with large whorls of bright lavender flowers that attract hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. Should be pruned after flowering in fall to maintain a more compact habit and increase flowering. Make sure that there are leaves below your pruning cuts otherwise the plant may not recover. Grows best in full sun and well-drained soil with occasional to infrequent water once established. One of the more ‘garden’ tolerant of the native hybrid sages .
