A low-growing perennial that forms a spreading mound of fuzzy, gray foliage. Perfect as a silvery, broad-leaf accent in perennial gardens or at the front of borders. Leaves are much larger than Silver Carpet and the species in general. In spring it blooms with tall, stout stalks of purple flowers. Prefers full sun exposure near the coast but requires light shade inland. Not particular about soil type as long as it is well-draining. Drought tolerant once established. Should be cleaned of dead foliage once a year to allow for air circulation and can be easily split once it reaches a good size. Dormant in the winter but will retain some foliage in many climates. We grow two types of Stachys byzantina: ‘Helene von Stein’ and ‘Silver Carpet’. ‘Helene von Stein’ is the larger-leaved and larger growing of the two and is also a more frequent bloomer.
