A low-growing perennial that forms a spreading mat of fuzzy, gray foliage. Perfect as a silvery, broad-leaf accent in perennial gardens or at the front of borders. Prefers full sun exposure near the coast but requires light shade inland. Not particular about soil type as long as it is well-draining. Drought tolerant once established. Should be cleaned of dead foliage once a year to allow for air circulation and can be easily split once it reaches a good size. Dormant in the winter but will retain some foliage. We grow two types of Stachys byzantina: ‘Helene von Stein’ and ‘Silver Carpet’. ‘Silver Carpet’ rarely blooms, so it’s the better one to use if you just want to grow it for the foliage. It is also smaller and has smaller leaves than ‘Helene von Stein’.
