A hybrid of Cistus albidus and Cistus crispus, ‘Sunset’ is a low mounding form of Rockrose popular for its dazzling spring and summer flower display. An evergreen shrub that tolerates poor soil, high heat, high wind, and coastal conditions, it can be grown in a variety of southern California microclimates. Spring through summer it’s covered in pink-magenta flowers with bright yellow centers. Fuzzy, lightly-crinkled, grey-green foliage makes it perfect for adding softness to landscapes. Perfect for cottage gardens, rock gardens, on dry slopes, and even along pavement. Grows 2 to 3 feet tall and spreads 5 feet or wider. Plant in full sun to light shade inland. Not particular about soil type as long as it is sharply-draining. Water occasionally to infrequently once established. Prune after flowering to maintain compact growth habit. In our experience, this hybrid is significantly more difficult to establish in the hottest inland areas. Deer resistant.
