Known to be extremely salt tolerant, Saltgrass is native to a variety of California (and North American) coastal and inland plant communities including salt flats, salt marshes, wetlands, and grasslands. It is most often used for habitat restoration and erosion control in areas with saline soils. Grows 6 to 12 inches tall and spreads continually via rhizomes, its dense root system eventually forming sod. Plant in full sun to light shade. Performs best in consistently moist to wet soil. Tolerant of seaside conditions, seasonal flooding, alkaline soil, sand, and clay.
