A diminutive succulent that grows in rock crevices in low-elevation California mountain ranges. Notable for its colorful foliage, its leaves emerge from the center of the rosette a silvery grey-blue and age to red and purple as they’re pushed out to the edges. Forms a small clump of rosettes just 4 to 6 inches tall and wide. Blooms from spring to mid summer with stout spikes of fragrant, bright orange and red flowers that are highly attractive to hummingbirds. Naturally grows in rock crevices and therefore performs best if planted on a small slope or raised area in your garden to allow water to drain quickly. Perfect for rock gardens, planted in rock walls, or grown in containers. Can take full sun on the coast but should be planted in light shade to part sun inland. Naturally summer dormant, so it’s best to give it no supplemental irrigation once established.
