Arguably the most ornamental of the California native buckwheats, this Eriogonum is most noted for its attractive rose to dark pink flowers. Although the common name is red buckwheat, the flowers are not really red in color. The flower color can vary quite a bit depending on the origin of the propagules. Stays low and tight to the ground but spreads slowly. More typically stays at 2-2.5 wide in the landscape. Grows best in full sun near the coast but can benefit from some protection from the hot inland sun during the summer. Subject to root rots during the inland summer if conditions are unfavorable for the plant. Although this buckwheat can be short lived or become unattractive after a few years, its beauty makes it well worth it. More appropriate for small scale specialty gardens and residential landscapes than commercial applications.
