A broadleaf, flowering shrub or tree native to the central California coast and inland mountain ranges and foothills. Very showy when in flower, in spring its long arching branches are covered in 2 to 3 inch wide golden yellow flowers. Naturally growing close to but not adjacent to seasonal washes and creeks, it should be planted at least a few feet away from a water source in the garden. Felted foliage is dark green on top and gray-green on the bottom, making for an interesting visual contrast. Plant in full sun to light shade. Requires sharply-draining soil and should be given no summer water once established. Can be trained into an espalier or screen. Small hairs on the leaves may irritate skin.
