Grevillea ‘Moonlight’ is a large-growing grevillea cultivated for its finely divided foliage, extended flowering period, and value to pollinators. It can be grown as a large shrub or small tree and is widely used as a screening plant, specimen, or habitat plant in Mediterranean-climate landscapes. Plants develop an upright, dense habit and typically reach 15–25 feet tall and 10–20 feet wide. The foliage is dark green above and silvery beneath, providing year-round texture and contrast in the landscape. Flower spikes are typically 6–8 inches long and bear pale yellow to creamy-white flowers. Blooming occurs most heavily from late winter through spring, with additional flowering occurring intermittently throughout the year. The flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds, bees, and other nectar-feeding wildlife.
Performs best in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soils. Adapted to occasional irrigation once established and tolerant of drought conditions. Young plants benefit from formative pruning to develop a strong framework. Periodic pruning thereafter helps maintain density and desired size.
Useful in screening plantings, privacy hedges, habitat gardens, pollinator gardens, low-water landscapes, Mediterranean-climate landscapes, large mixed borders, and specimen plantings.
Pests and Cultural Considerations: Generally low maintenance when grown in well-drained soils. Root diseases may occur in poorly drained sites or where irrigation is excessive. Chlorosis may develop in highly alkaline soils. Regular pruning from a young age is recommended to maintain a dense growth habit and prevent plants from becoming open or leggy. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood. Like many members of the Proteaceae, Grevillea is sensitive to phosphorus and should not be fertilized with high-phosphorus products. If fertilization is required, use low-phosphorus fertilizers formulated for Australian native plants.
