Known commonly as English Lavender, Lavandula angustifolia is actually native to the Mediterranean, meaning that it thrives in our southern California climate. It’s tolerant of high heat, temperatures down into the teens, and poor, dry soil. It forms a 2 to 3 foot tall and wide evergreen shrub densely covered in narrow, grey-green foliage. Blooms with spikes of highly fragrant, lavender purple flowers in midsummer. A perfect addition to Mediterranean, cutting, and cottage gardens. Performs best in well-drained, moderately fertile to poor soil, including sandy or gravelly soil. Plant in full sun to part shade inland. Water occasionally once established. Prune in late winter or early spring for fuller, more compact form. Flowers are edible.
