A natural hybrid of L. angustifolia and L. latifolia, ‘Provence’ is one of the most fragrant and easy to care for lavenders. It is highly tolerant of heat, humidity, and poor soil. Forms a compact, 2 to 3 foot tall and wide mound of fragrant, grey-green foliage. Blooms summer into fall with long wands of pale lavender purple flowers that attract a myriad of pollinators, particularly bees. Useful as a low hedge and striking when planted in masses. Be sure to shear on occasion to encourage new blooms, and prune once a year in late summer or early fall to maintain compact form. Plant in full sun to part shade inland. Performs best in less fertile, sharply-draining soil. Water only occasionally once established. Flowers are edible and retain their strong fragrance when dried.
