An upright, evergreen ground cover featuring dull bluish green, toothed leaves that take on shades of bright red to burgundy over the winter depending on the low temperatures. It spreads exceptionally slowly by rhizomes to form drifts up to 1 foot tall and over 3 feet wide. Bears clusters of tiny, bright yellow flowers in spring followed by powdery dark blue berries in the summer that attract wildlife. Useful as a shade groundcover under oaks. In hot inland gardens it grows best in part shade to full shade with regular to occasional water. Although one of the better groundcovers for dry shade and under oak trees, it has a very slow growth habit in most situations. Generally would recommend decreasing the spacing of the material to get more rapid coverage. Deer and rabbit resistant.Nomenclature has changed back and forth on this plant for the last few decades. Commonly referred to as Berberis aquifolium var repens.
