Owing its name to its metallic blue blades, this upright and rigid grass dazzles with wispy, pink-hued pannicles that appear in summer. It continues to provide striking foliage color in the fall, but it will go completely dormant in the winter. Not only is ‘Heavy Metal’ beautiful but the plant is also quite hardy. It has the ability to withstand both flooding and drought. It can even tolerate seaside salt spray. Birds are attracted to the plant as a food source, while other small animals use it for habitat. The grass also serves as a medium for erosion control. Since this Panicum will go fully dormant, even in temperate climates, it is recommended to cut it back to the base annually.
