Native to dry slopes along the central and southern California coast, Penstemon centranthifolius is notable for its glaucous blue-grey foliage and 3 to 4 foot tall spikes of tubular, scarlet red flowers. Flowers bloom mid spring into mid summer and are highly attractive to hummingbirds. A native that thrives on neglect, it is perfect for rock gardens and hot, dry sites without irrigation after an establishment period. Grow in full sun in sharply-draining soil with little organic matter. Will go semi-deciduous in times of extended drought. Water infrequently (twice per month or less) once established. Penstemon centranthifolius can be difficult to establish and is typically not suitable for large scale commercial projects. Even when planted during the recommended time, it can still be finicky as it is particularly sensitive to drainage and irrigation.
