A long-blooming evergreen perennial, Penstemon ‘Garnet’ is a Border Penstemon hybrid that features large, bell-shaped, garnet red flowers and glossy, lance-shaped leaves that contrast beautifully with its burgundy stems. Flowers bloom late spring into fall and are a favorite of hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. A perfect plant for cottage gardens and perennial beds and borders. Highly tolerant of moderately fertile and poor soils but needs sharp drainage. Prefers light to partial shade inland and regular to occasional irrigation. ‘Garnet’ is one of the longer-lived Border Penstemon varieties, its lifespan often extending beyond the usual 3 to 5 years. Deadhead flower spikes over the summer to encourage reblooming. ‘Garnet’ tends to have a loose, sprawling habit and will stay more compact if cut back over the winter.
