This fern has an extensive range, as it is an endemic species found along the vast west coast of North America. Populations can be found from California to Alaska. Some pockets of the species even exist on islands off of Baja California and even North Dakota. Here, in southern California, the plant is most successful in full shade. Under shady growing conditions, the fern will take on its more typical clumping form with outward spreading fronds. If the plant receives too much sun, the fronds may burn and the plant has a higher likelihood of dying. A particularly hardy fern, this plant only needs minimal summer irrigation once established
