A widespread native shrub that can be found throughout southern California from the coast to inland mountain ranges. Useful as a native hedge for screening or boundary marking. A dense evergreen shrub that can grow 6 to 7 feet tall and wide but can easily be pruned down to 3 to 4 feet for smaller garden applications. Small, glossy, toothed foliage and shiny red berries that appear in spring make it reminiscent of a small-leaved holly. Should be planted in groups of at least two to ensure pollination and berry production. Can take full sun along the coast but prefers part shade to mostly shade inland. A host plant for native butterflies and food source for birds. Water infrequently to not at all once established.
