Celestial Blue is a random cross between Salvia clevelandii ‘Alpine’, Salvia pachyphylla and perhaps others that was introduced to the trade by Las Pilitas Nursery. . A medium-sized shrub that grows 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, it blooms in spring and summer with large clusters of violet blue flowers and rose-purple calyxes that are highly attractive to hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. Grey-green foliage is fragrant and resembles its parentage of Salvia pachyphylla. Can be grown in full sun or partial shade inland. Needs good air circulation and sharply-draining soil, tolerating even rocky and gravelly soil. Water occasionally to infrequently but take special care in the summer in hot inland areas not to overwater.. Best if planted in the fall to early spring. And better suited for small scale use rather than in large commercial spaces since its establishment and failure rates can be higher than desired for such projects, particularly if the contractor/owner has no control over the installation schedule.
