A selection of true species Salvia clevelandii that is noted for its stunning dark purple / violet flowers and sweet fragrance. The leaves are dark green and much smaller than the grey / green S. clevelandii x S. leucophylla hybrids that are frequently sold as S. clevelandii. Flowers are on whorls and appear in abundance in the spring. Hummingbirds will frequent the plant while in bloom and swallowtail butterflies will harvest the nectar was well. This selection is best used in smaller scale applications where the maintenance and irrigation can be monitored closely. Unfortunately, it can have more problems in the landscape than the more common hybrids. It can be exceptionally sensitive to overwatering during the summer months. Cut back annually in the late summer to early fall for fresh growth and prolific flowering the following spring. Leaves must be left on the plant below the prune cuts otherwise the shrub will likely die, particularly if pruned during the hot summer months.
