Salvia Mrs. Beard is a hybrid low growing sage that is now quite widespread in the industry. It is thought to be a cross between S. sonomensis and S. mellifera and is very similar to Salvia Dara’s Choice. If Dara’s Choice is not available, Mrs. Beard is an excellent substitute and offers the same profile of beneficial traits. The plant has greenish aromatic leaves and blue/purple flowers in the spring that hummingbirds relish. In our experience, the leaves are slightly greener than those of Dara’s Choice. This Salvia is noted for its toughness and fast growth. It will quickly grow to its mature height and width within a couple of growing seasons. It is best suited for smaller scale and residential applications rather than large commercial projects. It can be susceptible to root rots, particularly in the summer months if drainage is not adequate or if receives too much water.
