Introduced by Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, Salvia ‘Starlight’ is a medium-sized shrub thought to be a hybrid of Salvia apiana and Salvia mellifera. Its soft, fragrant foliage is green and deeply textured on the tops of the leaves and grey-green on the bottom. In spring and summer, it blooms with spikes of loosely whorled, white to very light lavender flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Should be pruned after flowering in fall to maintain a more compact habit and increase flowering. Make sure that there are leaves below your pruning cuts otherwise the plant may not recover. Grows best in full sun and well-drained soil with occasional to infrequent water once established. Best if planted fall to early spring.
