This cultivar is favored for its large, showy, dark purple flowers that develop in winter and spring. The deep purple blooms are also known to produce a light fragrance. The California native should have its leggy branches pruned in late summer or fall. Well-drained media is required. In a landscape setting, it requires correct irrigation management and protection from direct exposure in the summer. Be warned that parts of this nightshade are poisonous.
