A native perennial, the California Goldenrod naturally grows throughout open grasslands. The species is highly appreciated for the support it provides to wildlife, such as birds and insects. The goldenrod spreads regularly through underground runners, so it should be planted in an area where it will have room to grow. It is easy to cultivate and will tolerate various garden soil conditions. Bundles of yellow blooms are borne in summer through fall. For that reason, particularly in California native gardens, this plant can be used to provide fall color, which can be difficult to attain in an exclusively native garden.
