A beautiful mid-sized buckwheat that has become quite popular in California native and drought tolerant landscapes. Creamy-white umbels of flowers cover the shrub in late spring. The flowers have a tinge of pink color but appear mostly white/cream. Like many buckwheats, these flowers fade to an attractive rust color in the late summer and fall. Requires pruning to keep in a tight, more attractive appearance. Attracts butterflies. Eriogonum arborescens is native to Santa Cruz Island. Can be challenging in larger scale commercial applications. In our view, it is best suited for small scale and residential landscapes in which it can be given the proper care and attention. Can be difficult to establish in inland valley landscapes, especially if planted during the summer months.
