Heuchera ‘Canyon Delight’ is a California hybrid coral bells selection developed by Dara Emery at Santa Barbara Botanic Garden as part of the Canyon Series. Selected from breeding work involving Heuchera elegans, a California native species, and hybrid forms of H. sanguinea, this evergreen perennial combines the compact habit and adaptability of California coral bells with the larger floral display and extended bloom associated with H. sanguinea. One of the earliest and most widely grown introductions from the Canyon Series, it is distinguished by its abundant rose-red to deep pink flowers, which are generally darker and more saturated than those of the related selection Heuchera ‘Canyon Pink’. But the differences are very subtle and can be influenced by cultural practices in the landscape.
Forms dense, evergreen mounds of medium to dark green foliage approximately 6–12 inches tall and up to 24 inches wide. In spring and early summer, 16-inch flower stalks rise above the foliage bearing abundant rose-red to deep pink flowers that attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators. Its compact habit and heavy bloom make it particularly useful in mass plantings, borders, and other high-impact landscape applications.
Performs best in part shade to full shade, though it will tolerate full sun in cooler coastal climates with adequate moisture. Adaptable to a variety of soil types provided drainage is good. Tolerant of regular irrigation and well suited to gardens receiving supplemental summer water, while remaining capable of performing in dry shade once established. While somewhat less drought tolerant than many Heuchera maxima hybrids, it remains a reliable choice for Southern California shade gardens, California native-inspired landscapes, low-water landscapes, and other understory plantings.
Particularly valuable as an understory planting beneath coast live oaks, valley oaks, and other mature trees. Useful in woodland gardens, shaded borders, dry shade gardens, oak woodland plantings, pollinator gardens, containers, habitat plantings, and other understory applications. An excellent coral bells selection for planting under oaks and other mature trees where year-round evergreen foliage and reliable seasonal bloom are desired. Its long-lived performance and adaptability make it suitable for both residential and commercial landscapes throughout Southern California.
Generally low maintenance. Mealybugs may occasionally occur, particularly around the crown in nursery production or densely planted situations. Slugs and snails can damage new growth in moist, shaded environments. Crown and root rot may develop in poorly drained soils or under prolonged wet conditions. Best performance is achieved with good drainage, moderate moisture, and adequate air circulation.
