Heuchera ‘Opal’ is a historic California hybrid coral bells selection developed by Dr. Lee Lenz at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden (now California Botanic Garden) from a cross between Heuchera maxima (California Channel Islands) and H. sanguinea (southwestern United States and Mexico). Selected from a breeding program initiated in 1953, this evergreen perennial combines the larger stature, drought tolerance, and shade adaptability of H. maxima with the larger flowers and extended floral display of H. sanguinea. A California native-derived hybrid, it remains one of the most durable and widely grown selections from the Rancho Santa Ana breeding program.

Forms dense mounds of softly textured, dark green foliage 1–2 feet tall and wide. In spring and early summer, plants produce 2-foot flower stalks bearing abundant white flowers that gradually blush pink with age. The flowers attract hummingbirds and other pollinators and provide a bright contrast in shaded garden settings.

Performs best in part shade to full shade, with some tolerance for full sun in cooler coastal climates. Adapted to occasional irrigation and capable of thriving in dry shade once established. Additional summer water can improve growth and flowering where appropriate. When planting beneath established native oaks, irrigation should be applied judiciously and in accordance with accepted oak management practices. Particularly well adapted to Southern California landscapes where dry shade beneath mature trees can limit planting options. Although long-lived and dependable when properly sited, ‘Opal’ is generally considered somewhat less adaptable than the closely related Heuchera maxima hybrids ‘Rosada’ and ‘Wendy’, particularly under stressful growing conditions. An excellent choice for planting beneath coast live oaks, valley oaks, and other mature trees.

Useful in woodland gardens, shaded borders, dry shade gardens, oak woodland plantings, pollinator gardens, California native-inspired landscapes, low-water landscapes, habitat plantings, and other understory applications. Pairs well with other California native shade plants including Ribes viburnifolium, Salvia spathacea, other Heuchera maxima hybrids, and Berberis repens (syn. Mahonia repens). Its evergreen foliage, adaptability, and long-lived performance make it suitable for both residential and commercial landscapes throughout Southern California.

Generally low maintenance. Mealybugs may occasionally occur around the crown, particularly in nursery production or densely planted situations. Slugs and snails can damage new growth in moist, shaded environments. Crown and root rot may develop in poorly drained soils or under prolonged wet conditions. Best performance is achieved with good drainage and adequate air circulation.
